Fun-loving prankster with a flair for the dramatic and a very serviceable little jumper from the top of the key, Tom, to me, was always looking for excitement. Whether it was careening around with a bunch of us in his mammoth blue mercury convertible or just his mere unpredictable presence, Tom was often the engine of chaos.
Good at basketball, but outstanding at golf. In our junior year (I think) because we were too lazy to do track that spring when the basketball season ended, we talked coach Holley into starting a golf team. Initially, it was a small group led by Tom McAfee that convinced coach that this would be good for the school. Tom, Kurt Wahlbrink, Gary Wallace, and me (the so-called “Speed Foursome” because at St. Ann’s we could play nine holes for a quarter after school every night in an hour) had a great time with Tom learning how to play golf and just having fun.
Tom’s favorite saying summed up his go-for-it philosophy: “Hit another one”.
